The Tattoo

Gazing at Mt. Rainier (an AI created image)

I went to the gym this morning to focus my strength and gather up energy. Then, my mojo was interrupted when I saw a slogan that activated my anger. I couldn’t shake it. After pummeling the wall with the medicine ball, I stopped to breathe and was reminded of the prayer I’ve been practicing. Before beginning my next exercise, I closed my eyes, acknowledged what I was feeling and said the Welcoming Prayer: I let go of my desire for security, affection, and control and embrace this moment as it is.

As I turned around I saw a young man with a tattoo covering his upper arm. From a distance I could see a river, trees, a mountain. With my next breath I smiled and thought, “oh my happy place!” With little hesitation, I approached him as he rested to tell him I was admiring his tattoo. He readily engaged, letting me know it was his happy place, too. His last tour of duty with the Navy was in Washington where he found solace in the shadow of Mt. Rainier with his family. He now carried that reminder with him. On closer look I could see his three children included in the tattoo. It was a refreshing moment.

For the rest of my workout, I smiled. Grateful for how God shows up, answers a prayer to let go and brings a smile to my heart in the moment that is.

 Now, back to work.
in this together…
